Subject content

Pupils follow the Salters Advanced Chemistry Syllabus. This is a context based syllabus where pupils are taught the chemical concepts within storylines. This ensures that the information is relevant and engaging for the pupils. The storylines covered are:

Year 12

•  Elements of life

•  Developing fuels

•  From minerals to elements

•  Atmosphere

•  The polymer revolution

Year 13

•  What's in a medicine?

•  Designer polymers

•  Engineering proteins

•  The steel story

•  Aspects of agriculture

•  Colour by design

•  The oceans

•  Medicines by design

•  Visiting chemical industry

In both Years 12 and 13 there is a practical coursework element to the course.

Enrichment days and trips

Year 12 students have 2 enrichment days to carry out their practical coursework.

Year 13 students have an enrichment day to focus on their individual investigation. In addition to this a day is spent visiting the National Gallery in London to supplement the "Colour by Design" unit of study and the students also visit the Shepherd's Neame Brewery in Faversham to supplement the "Visiting Chemical Industry" unit.
