The English course, which is compulsory at Key Stage 4, provides two separate GCSE qualifications from an integrated programme of study.
All students are entered for both subjects at the Higher Tier.
The Key Stage 4 English course tests:
- detailed knowledge and understanding of texts in various genres. We think you will find the books and subjects for study interesting and the class activities thought-provoking and helpful.
- language skills which involve analysis, argument, persuasion, explanation and exploration in speech and in writing.
Both skills and knowledge are assessed through coursework and examination. (English: Two written papers + 40% coursework; English Literature: One written paper + 30% coursework.)
GCSE work will begin immediately after the SATs in Year 9 and the specialist English teachers will guide you through the assessment targets and help you to achieve the best results possible, with high but achievable expectations.
Good results in English at KS4 provide you with an excellent foundation for A levels and Higher Education. In particular, good results provide access to one or more of the rigorous, motivating and prestigious A level subjects we offer in English, both traditional and newly introduced.
