English Literature

We offer AS / A level English Literature.  This is a high profile and highly regarded subject for University Entrance and for general education, developing students’ skills of analysis and tone of literature.

Students are treated as young adults from the beginning and are provided at the outset with a detailed scheme of work for the two years and all the relevant mark schemes.

All texts are provided and the school’s considerable computing and audio- visual resources are always available.

  

Some of the main features of our AS/A level English Course are:

•             An equal balance between modern and classic texts.  

•             A full range of literary genre –novels, poetry and plays.  

•             Literature from a range of cultures and traditions. 

•             One topic based entirely on students’ own (guided) choice.

•             Coursework is highly valued and forms an important feature of students’ learning.

•             Two teachers for each class.

•             All the English teachers at this school have degrees in English and specialist training in English teaching.

•             The results are high. Most students obtain the very top grades of A and B.

  

You should bring to this course:


•             Pleasure in reading and writing

•             Enjoyment of discussing ideas and perceptions

•             A reasonable ability (GCSE grade B)

•             A good work pattern including self-motivation

This course will help you to be:

•             Well qualified for university or other futures

Other points to bear in mind:

•             A level English Language, Film Studies and Media Studies are related Subjects. You could study two complementary courses.  A level English is a requirement of some prestigious universities for their Film Studies Degree Course (e.g. Warwick, King’s College London)

•             Our last OFSTED inspection praised the quality of A level teaching in English.

•             The way the course is organised and taught fully supports the school’s aim to develop confident adults whose academic qualifications and personal qualities enable them to establish themselves in the world.
