  German - Key Stage 3

Key Stage 3

Key Stage 4

Key Stage 5

This language is offered as a second foreign language, after the pupils have studied French in Year 7

The German Department is pleased to have a partner school in Nordrhein-Westfalen , Germany . Already many of our pupils in the German classes have e-mail partners at this school, and we are arranging visits between the two schools in 2008 and 2009. Video conferences are an alternative way of communicating, which enable us to discuss topics of common interest. The theme for 2008 is “Environmental awareness and recycling in schools”.

Subject content

The basic structure of the language is introduced. Grammatical concepts such as cases and gender are covered in the early stages, followed by word order and sentence structure. The language is primarily in the present tense.

Pupils are encouraged to express themselves orally and in writing, and they learn to understand by listening and reading.

Vocabulary includes Self Family and Friends; House and Home; School; Hobbies; Daily Routine; Food and Drink.

Enrichment days and trips

Recently, short residential trips have been arranged to the Christmas market at Aachen and to Berlin . We have welcomed the Onatti Theatre Group to the school, who perform plays to language-learners.
