Healthy Schools is about a happier environment as much as a physically and psychologically healthier student; this is something that the school always feels has been a strength. We started off by asking all students, staff and parents a variety of questions on how healthy they feel the school is and suggestions for improvement; we’ve taken many of these on board:
- Mr Keeling-Jones and a team of senior prefects have set up the Student Voice initiative, including the School Council, which allows students to have more of a say in how their school works and help their own learning
- Ms Hern has worked hard with her team of volunteers to gain the ‘Eco-Schools’ Silver award, which means that Oakwood Park is working towards a healthier environment through initiatives like recycling paper, ink cartridges and old mobile ‘phones, as well as reducing our energy output and improving the general school environment
- Parts of the site are now being fenced off to make it more secure
- There are plans to allow more time for Physical Education activities for all students
- Equally, new subjects such as Food Technology are currently being considered
- A new catering company have been employed to offer meals that meet government regulations on food; they are constantly working to make sure that people are happy with what they offer
- PSHE will now be offered to all year groups, initially with a mental and physical health theme, broadening to further issues of social and economic well-being next year
- New projects such the ‘thinking schools’ or critical thinking have been started in order to help students to focus upon their best ways of learning; the staff as a whole are working towards this, helped by a gradual increase in new technology in the school such as Interactive Whiteboards
The Healthy Schools project is ongoing- all this change has been brought about in little over a year and further development can be expected for the future. If you have anything that you would like to contribute, please see Miss Robinson. |
