ICT at Oakwood Park Grammar School in Key Stage 5

Computing

vs

Applied ICT

Oakwood Park Grammar School is unusual in offering a genuine choice in computer-related AS/A levels.

Text Box: 'Computing' and 'ICT' are NOT the same thing!

Applied ICT is concerned with your skills in using computer systems to solve problems, whereas Computing involves the study of computers themselves, as well as practical work to develop your programming techniques.

•  Computing is ideal for those interested in computers or computer software, and is perfect for students who may be thinking of a career in computing, programming, engineering, etc.

•  Applied ICT is a very exciting new course, aimed at computer users , and will be very valuable for a career in a huge range of professions.

Both are very highly-regarded subjects, welcomed by all college courses and professions.

requirements

These subjects do not follow on directly from work in any other subject at GCSE, although both courses assume a basic proficiency in ICT.

However, students will need at least a grade C in an ICT GCSE short course, or similar, for both courses, and at least a grade B in GCSE Maths for Computing.

In addition, an interest in the subject is essential for either course!

success

OPGS has offered AS & A level Computing courses for very many years. We were one of the first schools to teach Computing as an academic subject, and have enjoyed good results ever since.

Applied ICT is a new course - our first students have just finished their second year. It immediately became a very popular course at OPGS.
