  Music - Key Stage 3

Key Stage 3

Key Stage 4

Key Stage 5

The Music Department at OPGS is housed in a purpose-built unit , separate from the rest of the school, with two classrooms, and two studio rooms (one is a recording studio and the other a dedicated drum room). Each classroom has a full complement of k/s 3 keyboards and percussion instruments. GCSE and A-level pupils have regular access to the practice and computer facilities that are set aside specifically for Music. The entire ground floor is hard-wired for microphone leads connected directly to either of the two digital recording decks.

Subject content

Pupils regularly use classroom instruments in groups to prepare work to demonstrate their understanding of key musical concepts. Together with singing, instrumental performance, listening and composition, notation is introduced in year 7, technology in year 8 and film music in year 9. The emphasis is on participation and progress. All pupils are encouraged to continue or begin instrumental tuition.

Extension work

All the tasks set in k/s 3 are achievable without prior skills, but those pupils who have the advantage of a musical background always have the opportunity for extension work. Assignments are by their nature open ended. Pupils are encouraged to become involved in any of the school-based clubs: choir, orchestra, wind band, steel band, jazz band, recorder group, tech. club and theory club. Visiting teachers (Kent Music and independent) offer lessons for a wide range of instruments taught throughout the week on a rota basis. Concerts are held termly and performers are invited to participate. The school groups perform regularly.

Enrichment days and trips

South Asian music is introduced by a visiting percussion specialist.
