Physical Education - Key Stage 3

Key Stage 3

Key Stage 4

Key Stage 5

Physical Education is an essential part of every school. The government recommend that a minimum of 2 hours should be spent participating in PE per week. Our Physical Education curriculum at Oakwood Park is both broad and interesting as we are constantly trying to allow our students the opportunity to experience a wide variety of activities.

The PE National Curriculum is divided into 4 Key Strands which are promoted through Physical Education.

  • Acquiring and Developing skills
  • Selecting and Applying skills and tactics
  • Evaluating and Improving
  • Knowledge and Understanding of Fitness and Health

Subject content

In Key Stage 3 pupil's will participate in the following sports, Football, Rugby, Cricket, Tennis, Athletics, Basketball, Gymnastics, Dance, Boxercise, Orienteering and Health Related Fitness.

During this Key Stage pupils will continue to build and improve on the sports that are listed above not just from a practical point of view but also improving in the 4 Key Strands.

Extension work

All pupils have the opportunity to join lunch time and after school clubs, which are excellent vehicles for promoting social, moral and spiritual development, outside of the 'classroom environment'. We cover many team sports including Football, Rugby and Cricket but also individual sports such as, Rowing, Gymnastics and Tennis. We also plan to include extreme sports this summer when we will run an Ultimate Frisbee club.

Enrichment days and trips

Enrichment days in the PE department are an excellent way for the boys in each form to work closely together. The form sports captain is in charge of arranging two teams to compete in the inter-form football, rugby and cricket competitions. They have to ensure that everyone within the form is involved in some capacity; this could be experiencing a number of different roles from player or coach to referee.

Enrichment days are also used to enhance the pupil's knowledge and understanding of PE by focusing on Analysis of Performance within the sports we cover. By doing this it provides the pupil's with the skills necessary to coach themselves and each other in order to improve their performances.

The PE enrichment days are extremely popular with the students and although each form is competitive during the matches they all demonstrate excellent sportsmanship throughout.

The PE Department are also developing the range of activities available to pupils on Enrichment Days and are looking into future days which involve Swimming (KEY STAGE 3) and Outdoor and Adventurous Activities.
