GCSE PE is made up of 40% Theoretical Exam and a 60% Practical Assessment over the two years. Pupils study from the EDEXCEL Specification and they cover the following topics:
• Sporting Activities and Analysis of Performance
• Exercise and Training
• Safety Aspects and Risk Assessment in Sport and Physical Activity
• Applied Anatomy and Physiology
In YEAR 10 pupils still have compulsory PE each week and they cover the same sports as in KEY STAGE 3.
In YEAR 11 however the pupils are allowed to choose options for 'YEAR 11 GAMES' which takes place on a Wednesday afternoon. Pupils have the opportunity to represent the school sports teams at senior level in Football, Rugby and Cricket or they choose a different sporting 'option'. A list of the 'options' is below:
1 st & 2 nd XI Football, 1 st XV Rugby, Table Tennis, Swimming, Badminton, Ten Pin Bowling, Orienteering, Martial Arts, Weights and Fitness, Basketball, Golf.
In year 10 and 11 pupils still have the opportunity to participate with school clubs and represent the school sports teams. Many of the pupils are used to help coach teams and practices which links closely to the government initiative called the Junior Sports Leader Award (JSLA).
Enrichment days in the PE department are an excellent way for the boys in each form to work closely together. The form sports captain is in charge of arranging two teams to compete in the inter-form football, rugby and cricket competitions. They have to ensure that everyone within the form is involved in some capacity; this could be experiencing a number of different roles from player or coach to referee.
Enrichment days are also used to enhance the pupil's knowledge and understanding of PE by focusing on Analysis of Performance within the sports we cover. By doing this it provides the pupil's with the skills necessary to coach themselves and each other in order to improve their performances.
The PE enrichment days are extremely popular with the students and although each form is competitive during the matches they all demonstrate excellent sportsmanship throughout.
The PE Department are also developing the range of activities available to pupils on Enrichment Days and are looking into future days which involve Swimming (KEY STAGE 3) and Outdoor and Adventurous Activities.
