Sixth Form Charities and Volunteeering
The school prides itself on its charity fundraising as it not only uses pupil power to benefit others, but also enables students to work in a team and get experience liaising with external agencies. Over the last three years the Sixth Form, working with the whole school and the wider community, have raised close to £35,000 for charities such as Teenage Cancer Trust and Demelza House. Fundraising initiatives include popular annual events such as Year 7 Halloween and Valentines Disco with MGGS and 'Stars in their Eyes', along with cake sales and non-school uniform days. Our charities for 2016-17 will be Maidstone Mencap and The Heart of Kent Hospice, for whom many of our Sixth Form volunteer.
OPGS has a strong ethos of contributing to the wider community through its volunteering programme. All Year 12 students take part in voluntary work, ranging from academic mentoring in OPGS to teaching lessons in local primary schools and work for local charities. Where possible, students will volunteer in an area that matches their future plans. Politics students, for example, are analysing data for local political parties and future medical students volunteer at the nearby Maidstone Hospital.
