History is a thriving subject at Oakwood Park Grammar School with students going on to study it further at Oxford and Cambridge in recent years as well as record numbers opting for it at IGCSE . We as a department pride ourselves on our Enrichment programme and our Oxbridge Challenge projects as well as being at the forefront of new developments such as the IGCSE and the Pre-U. We also work closely with the other humanities subjects for the school’s Second Specialism.

Key Stage 3

At Key Stage 3 we cover a wide range of British History topics from 1066-1945

Topics include : The Battle of Hastings, the Magna Carta, the Black Death, Henry VIII, the Industrial Revolution, World War I and World War II

The History Department arranges a variety of enrichment activities in Key Stage 3.

These activities include a series of days with our Oxbridge Challenge group as well as a joint day with technology looking at Medieval warfare and various trips to places of historical interest in Norfolk and France.

Key Stage 4 GCSE

Cambridge IGCSE

Detailed content can be found on the IGCSE website but includes topics such as the Causes of World War I, the League of Nations, Hitler’s Germany , the Russian Revolution, the Cold War and Vietnam.

Extension and Enrichment

Enrichment activities include trips to Duxford and Ypres to look at the impact of World War I and II.

History has followed the Cambridge Pre-U syllabus for a number of years and we have enjoyed the flexibility a two year course brings. The topics followed allow real rigorous breadth of study as they range from Richard III through to the Spanish Civil War and the Russian Revolution. Students have responded to the new course with outstanding exam results.
