Active Citizens

Overview

At OPGS school, we are committed to developing responsible, respectful and active citizens who understand the values that underpin life in modern Britain. We actively promote the British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. These values are embedded throughout our school fundamental principles of Kindness, Tolerance and Respect. Through a whole-school approach in the curriculum, pastoral provision, democratic participation, student leadership, volunteering and charitable activity, we aim to ensure that students leave us with a strong understanding of their rights and responsibilities, respect for others and the confidence, knowledge and skills to strive and serve in British society.

Through Citizenship lessons in Years 7–11 in our formtime curriculum, students develop their understanding of democracy, government, rights and responsibilities, the rule of law and their role within society. Students have opportunities to explore current affairs each week through discussions about The Day news articles, consider political participation and the issues that affect their age group and wider society.

The promotion of British Values is also embedded across a range of other curriculum areas. History, Religious Studies (RS) and Sociology provide students of all ages with opportunities to explore different perspectives, cultures, beliefs, societies and historical experiences. These and all subjects encourage students to question, debate and evaluate ideas, while developing an appreciation of diversity, tolerance and the importance of understanding different viewpoints.

We also provide students with meaningful opportunities to experience democracy and active citizenship. Students are encouraged to participate in the KYCC Young Person’s Elections, giving them the opportunity to engage with the democratic process and understand the importance of having their voice heard. The OPGS Student Council provides a further opportunity for student participation, with representatives from every form via their form captain sharing their views and opinions directly with the Senior Leadership Team. Through the Council, students can raise issues, share ideas and contribute to discussions about school life, developing confidence, leadership and an understanding of democratic representation.

Our commitment to active citizenship extends beyond the school community. Students participate in annual volunteering opportunities in Years 8–10 and Year 12, enabling them to contribute positively to their communities, develop a sense of social responsibility and understand the impact that individuals can have on the lives of others. At OPGS we have contributed over 20,000 hours of volunteering to the local community from supporting building projects to helping local primary schools on our annual volunteering day.
