Sixth Form Charities and Volunteeering
OPGS has a strong ethos of contributing to the school and wider community through its volunteering programme. All Year 12 students take part in voluntary work, ranging from academic mentoring in OPGS to teaching lessons in local primary schools and work for local charities. Where possible, students will volunteer in an area that matches their future plans. Politics students, for example, are analysing data for local political parties and graphics students worked last year to create a film for The Heart of Kent Hospice.
The school prides itself on its charity fundraising as it not only uses pupil power to benefit others, but also enables students to work in a team and get experience liaising with external agencies. Over the last three years the Sixth Form, working with the whole school and the wider community, have raised close to £40,000 for charities with which our students or their families have had personal involvement such as Teenage Cancer Trust, Mind and Maidstone Mencap. This year our charity choice is The Lily Foundation. Fundraising initiatives have included popular annual events such as Year 7 Halloween Disco with MGGS and will this year involve 'The Prefects' Valentine Show', along with cake sales and non-school uniform days.
