KS4 Extended Learning (EX)

All year 9 students will have 3 hours per fortnight following the new Extended Learning curriculum.  This curriculum is designed to provide students with exciting and challenging opportunities as well as extra qualifications to supplement their GCSE’s.  The curriculum will continue into year 10.

The Extended Learning curriculum will include the following qualifications and opportunities:

Year 9

Students will take part in a carousel of different activities.  These could include:

Leadership: Understand a variety of leadership, management and team working models.

Information, Advice & Guidance (IAG): Students will also be given extra support in areas such as career advice, personal finance, etc.

Thinking Skills Taster: A unique chance to find out more about thinking skills and how they affect learning. Students will plan a conference for primary school students to teach them how to use the Thinking Maps.

Cookery: During the Cooking Extended Learning this year the students will be learning and practising high standards of kitchen hygiene and safety.

Art History: As part of this course, all students will visit Maidstone Museum to look at the exhibitions and gallery

Photography: An introduction to basic digital photography skills and editing of photographs.

Creative Writing: Students explore ways into original writing through a series of games and activities which aim to get the creative juices flowing; activities include ‘free writing’, ‘flash crime’ and ‘the exquisite corpse’ – it is all about being experimental with a focus on process not product.

In the summer term all students will take part in Outdoor Pursuits.

Outdoor Pursuits: There will also be a chance in the summer term for students to take part in a selection of outdoor pursuits.  This is likely to include an optional Scuba Diving try dive, camping skills, etc.

Students will also complete the following:

First Aid Qualification: Students will complete a certified first aid course.  This will be run and delivered by an outside agency.

Study Skills: The study skills lessons are designed to help students with revision techniques, managing their time, different learning styles, etc.

Year 10

The Higher Project: The Edexcel Level 2 Higher Project is designed for learners to study a topic area which extends or expands their learning in an appropriate area of study, possibly linked to one of their GCSE subjects.  Learners will be assessed on their ability to plan, manage, complete and review their project.

The Higher Project gives the students an opportunity to gain an additional half GCSE grades A*-C.
